What is an audiologist?

Audiologists are expert hearing specialists who devote their practice to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. Hearing loss and balance disorders often create complex implications medically, psychologically, socially and educationally for the patient. It is the job of the audiologists to provide services that minimize the impact on the patient’s quality of life.

Hearing assessments are administered to infants giving audiologists the ability to manage hearing loss in children. As people age however, the incidence of hearing loss increases and as the aging population grows, audiologists are needed to assist in the chronic health condition of hearing loss.

Audiologists also manage, assess and fix hearing aids, as well as administer hearing tests. They will evaluate different environments and fit people in special ear plugs or other hearing protection. If hearing aids are prescribed, an audiologist can help the patient with the different technology available to suit their particular needs.
