Invisalign Works Miracles For Local Clergyman

As a clergyman, the Rev. Anthony Kowbeidu does not take the term miracle lightly. As a dental patient, however, he readily admits that Invisalign and Dr. Lee Hershon are in the process of accomplishing something he regards as well above the ordinary.

“He has performed miracles in my mouth,” said Kowbeidu, associate pastor at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. “I had a tooth that was way out of line, and some other teeth needed to be aligned. I have seen tremendous improvement with the help of Dr. Hershon and his team.”

Kowbeidu, who came to the United States from his native Africa at the age of 28, probably would have had to rely on traditional metal braces to fix his dental problems when he moved to this country 19 years ago. In the past decade or so, a new technology has emerged that eliminates many of the problems that in the past have made wearing braces a less than rewarding experience.

The Invisalign system consists of clear, invisible aligners made of tough and flexible biomedical plastic. Patients must wear them at least 20 hours a day, but they can be removed easily for eating, brushing, flossing and participating in activities such as sports and music.

Using photographs, X-rays and impressions, a computer application creates a series of clear plastic aligners designed specifically for each patient, who wears the aligners for two weeks, then moves on to the next set in the series.

“My mouth closes much differently than before,” said Kowbeidu, who has been using the aligners since February 2010 and will be finished in February 2012. “I see improvement every time I move to another aligner.”

Dr. Hershon, who has been practicing in the Charleston area for more than 35 years, pointed out that most patients require between 20 and 40 sets of aligners. He usually provides his patients with four sets at a time, so they return to his office only every eight weeks, when he carefully monitors their progress and adjusts the aligners, if necessary.

Based on the number of patients he has treated successfully, Dr. Hershon was ranked by Invisalign as a Preferred Premier Provider early in 2011. He was well on his way to Invisalign’s highest rating of Preferred Elite Provider, a designation reserved for orthodontists who have “achieved an extraordinary level of Invisalign case experience.”

He also has developed a loyal following among his patients.
